These 5 songs are the cornerstones of my work with children. They represent the way that I guide the children through the day by slowing us down together and connecting on a heart level, then teaching through song, which often reaches children on a deeper level than spoken words alone.

Getting Dressed- Originally written for my own daughter, this sweet little song is my favorite and most effective as it softly transforms getting children dressed into a beautiful calm experience of connection.

Tidy Up Teamwork- this song supports a group of children to work together as a team and pack away after their play. The children are often surprised at how soon we’re finished sometimes exclaiming, “Wow! It’s done!”

Kind Words- I created this song to encourage respectful communication and remind children to ask for what they want and also say “please”. It affirms that speaking kindly to each other is one of the most basic ways we can care for one another.

Washing Hands- This song gently guides children through the simple steps of washing hands. It reminds them to use soap, rub both hands together to wash, and then rinse them clean.

Circle Time- Used as a melodic signal to the children, this song inspires them to cross the bridge from the previous activity and gather for circle time. It gently reminds them to choose a cushion as they transition calmly, connecting as group and ready to enjoy songs and a story together.

Marla’s Tip - I sing these songs every day when I’m working with the children. Each morning after play time, we sing Tidy Up Teamwork as we pack up the room together for Circle Time, when we sing the Circle Time song. From there, we wash our hands for morning tea. While each child takes a turn at the sink, I sing Washing Hands guiding them through the routine. During the meal, children make various requests which brings about opportunities to sing Kind Words when I’m either complimenting them on their good manners or softly reminding children to say “please”. After the meal, we dress for outside play when I softly sing Getting Dressed as I hold open a sleeve or sock for a child to put an arm or foot into. Each song is a small part of the rhythm of each day and somehow makes us all feel good and the day flow with ease.
