I created each of these three songs in the Going Outside Bundle at very different times in my life with children, and for very different reasons. Together, they help me to support the children calmly get dressed and prepared for outdoors, so that we can all enjoy getting ready together. Once we’re out there, the children patiently wait safely at gates.
Getting Dressed- this is the first song I created, for my daughter as a toddler, to encourage her to put her arm into the sleeve I offered open for her, or her foot into a sock. This is the most effective of all my songs as it transforms dressing children into a beautiful calm experience of connection.
Into the Garden- I created this song to support children who feel reluctant about putting on shoes, and especially hats, to have a change of heart and enjoy the getting dressed routine before heading outside.
Wait at the Gate- this song encourages children to pause and wait calmly at gates before adults open them so that everyone can move through together.
Marla’s Tip - I sing these songs every day when I’m working with the children. Getting Dressed works like magic, creating such precious moments between the children and I as they calmly get dressed while I softly sing and help them. Then, Into the Garden reminds everyone that we need to put on our shoes and hats, whether they be beanies or sunhats, depending on the weather. Once we’re outside, as we approach the gates, I sing Wait at the Gate which reminds the children to slow down as they join in the song and pause for everyone to gather together before we move on through.
