I created these songs at times when I felt a need for a gentle song that would carry a deeper message than spoken words alone. Melody has the ability to reach a person where words can’t and I wanted to support the children as much as I could during the more challenging everyday moments when they needed to wait patiently, share with others, or ask for something kindly.
Taking Turns-the melody of this song has a subtle to-and-fro sound which resembles the rhythm of turn taking. The lyrics reassure children that it will be their turn again, as is the natural flow of sharing.
Kind Words-this song encourages respectful communication, reminding children to ask for what they want and to also say “please”. It affirms that speaking kindly to each other is one of the most basic ways we can care for one another. After the song, children often repeat “Manners ARE kind!”
Waiting at the Table- sometimes in life children are expected to stay at the meal table until others have finished and that can be challenging for them. I wrote this song to help children stay connected, relax and wait patiently with the group or family.
Marla’s Tip - I sing these songs whenever I notice a child could benefit from the gentle support they offer at some of the more difficult times throughout the day. Through each of those songs, emotional intelligence is quietly encouraged as well as the skills that make those moments easier.
