Waiting at the Table

I created Waiting at the Table because I noticed lots of children need support during mealtime routines, especially when they’re expected to wait with the group until others are finished eating. Many children are in the habit of leaving the table as soon as or before they’ve finished eating. In my care service, all of the children stay together at the table until everyone has finished so that we can move onto the next group activity together.

Marla’s Tip - Often parents are surprised at how much more their children eat in my care. For many reasons I keep the group together at the table and when they’ve finished, I sing this song. The song gently reassures children that after the waiting comes something enjoyable to look forward to. At the same time, I give them a warm, damp cloth to clean their face and hands, which they happily fold, roll and transform into countless little games while they wait.
